To say that there is massive opportunity in the online education market and that now is the best time ever to create an online course would be a GROSS UNDERSTATEMENT! In fact, in the next video we will dive into how exponential growth and the democratization of education converge to make online education one of the fastest growing industries with massive growth potential going into the future.
In this video we’re going to look at the information age we live and who can be an infopreneur or course creator (HINT: the answer is anyone!).
But first, let’s start with WHY. No matter how much potential there is in the online course industry or what type of epic wisdom you could share with your students, you’re not going to move forward unless you know WHY you’re doing it.
So, let’s take a look at the TOP 7 REASONS TO CREATE AN ONLINE COURSE. You can consider which of these reasons is the motivation that drives you. We will be revisiting this in more detail in another video.
1 PASSION: Share your passion (aka get paid to teach what you know and love online)
2 INCOME: Create a side income OR start a business as a full-time online course creator
3 PASSIVE INCOME: Create passive income (create a course once and get paid for it over and over again)
4 MARKETING: Get paid to market yourself to new clients and build your credibility
5 FREEDOM: Free your time by turning what you currently do with your clients into an online course they can take without you having to be there (aka stop trading your time for money)
6 IMPACT: Increase your impact, reach a broader audience, and build your credibility
7 LEGACY: Secure your legacy by ensuring your knowledge outlives you
Now that you know why to create a course, I would like to welcome you to the Information Age!
You’ve probably heard the phrase “we live in the information age.” So, what does it mean? It means that all of the information we could ever want to know is at our fingertips—just a keyboard click or smart phone tap away. So, who CREATES all of this information that is so readily available through our electronic devices? Infopreneurs. An infopreneur is an entrepreneur that packages knowledge into an information product and sells it online. They can be the people who create the content or the people or businesses that sell this information. In this video, we are referring to the ones who actually create the content. The role of a content creator has changed and grown with access to technology. Infopreneurs used to sell their information as audio tapes, print books, CD’s, DVD’s or through seminars and conferences. In today’s world, infopreneurs sell their information through eBooks, videos, webinars, and of course online courses.
Who Can Be an Infopreneur or Course Creator?
We want to let you know that no matter what it is that you know or love, you can get paid to teach it online. Anyone can do this! There are 4 types of knowledge you might have that you could teach through a course. Later you’ll evaluate what you have to offer, but first lets look at the possibilities.
Do you have expertise (knowledge, experience or wisdom) in a particular industry, business, career or hobby?
Keep in mind you do not have to be THE BEST in order to be an expert. The truth is that no matter how much you know, you know more than SOMEONE. To a 65-year-old business executive, a 10 year old YouTuber has valuable expertise they can learn from. If you can teach someone something they don’t already know, you’re an expert. Here’s your hat, put it on.
Do you have a talent or skill that you can teach others that would offer them a shortcut to a higher level of skill?
The skill you teach doesn’t have to be super high value, such as how to raise capital for businesses. There are infopreneurs making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year sharing their passion with everyday people who want to improve anything from their communication skills to knitting.
Do you have a process that you have learned, improved, or created that would help others achieve a desired outcome or goal?
A process is simply a proven step-by-step system that you have found to be effective that someone else could use to duplicate your results. Your process can be anything from how to increase your productivity to how to start a business or from how to lose weight to how to bake bread.
Truly ANYTHING you know that others do not can be made into an information product.
The only other requirement is that you have to be WILLING TO LEARN and WILLING TO TEACH.
And the good news is that powerful technologies are already in place that make it EASY for you to take knowledge out of your head and put it into a form you can sell.
For example, if you wanted to publish a book 20 years ago you had to send the manuscript to the gatekeepers of the industry (the big publishing houses) and hope they publish you (which they usually don’t). Now, you can easily self-publish and have it distributed around the world almost overnight. The same thing goes with online courses. There are services available allow you to put your course online where your students can take it without you having to build a website—all you have to do is upload your videos. Done! The filming of your course can be done in your own home with equipment you probably already have. You can even use your smartphone. And the editing process is much more simple than most people expect. Plus, there are cost-effective resources available for you to OUTSOURCE the editing process if you don’t want to do it yourself. We can even do it for you! (More information about that can be found in the Video Production Editing section of the course.)
So there you have it—you know all the reasons why you want to create an online course—you’ve got some ideas about what types of knowledge you could teach—and you know that resources and technology are available that will make this process easy for you! So let’s get started!
But just in case you’re not already eager to get started now, I want to throw out one more idea. We like to think about online courses as being like the new real estate. There is a land grab going! If you put yourself on the map now in your industry, you’ll be holding the best real estate in the market. Plus, every time you create an online course, you build it once but you get paid for it over and over again. But, unlike an investment property, there is no big down payment upfront and very little upkeep. It’s the best possible form of passive income. Now is the time!
